Graduate assistantships

Graduate assistantships are an instrumental part of the CSL experience. While not required, nearly every CSL student over the past decade has benefited from a graduate assistantship. These experiences prepare students for a future in the sport industry, build their resume and develop their network.

  • Students should apply for GA positions once they have applied to the CSL for admission.
  • Each student is limited to applying to a maximum of three GA positions.
  • Follow the instructions within each GA position description below when applying for a given position.

University of Richmond Academic Support Services for Athletics

Description: This position will provide assistance and support to all members of the Academic Support Staff services in a myriad of areas not limited to those listed below.  

 Academic Advising:  Academic advising at the University of Richmond operates under a “developmental” model. This approach encourages close interaction between advisor and advisee over time as both the advisor/advisee relationship and the student grow and develop. It also encourages a holistic view of the student with the advisor supporting the student through a range of choices including major/minor selection, course selection, participation in valuable co-curricular experiences, and even social-group/extra-curricular choices. 

Academic Counseling/Coaching: In addition to academic advising, our staff provides academic support for student-athletes to help them develop the skills they need to be successful students; this includes, but is not limited to, time management, assignment management, writing, reading comprehension, study skills, and test taking strategies.  The type of support provided to each student-athlete is individualized and determined by the student’s needs.  This support is provided in the form of one-on-one meetings, group meetings, and programming.

Study Hall:  Assisting with the coordination and supervising of study hall is a major component of the graduate assistantship. The purpose of study hall is to provide a structured environment that fosters both academic discipline and accountability among all student-athletes.  Study Hall Monitors promote a collaborative learning environment for student-athletes who are required to complete study hall hours. Study Hall positions require a willingness to work with a diverse population of student athletes, It will be your goal to engage student athletes to want to learn how to become better students.  Study Hall is held during the day and nighttime hours.    

Additional responsibilities could include administrative support to the Full Time Staff, the development of calendars and schedules, tutoring, mentoring student-athletes, monitoring student-athlete academic progress, assisting with on-campus recruiting, assist with scheduling of academic tutors, prepare academic reports/ assessments, assist with coordinating travel/excuse letters and all other duties as assigned by the academic support staff. 

Preference is given to those students with specific academic skill sets.  Previous experience as a tutor in a subject specific field (Math, Science, Foreign Language, English, Economics, Accounting, etc.) is preferred.

Athletics Leadership and Performance Intern

University of Richmond Athletics

Description: The Athletics Leadership and Performance Intern will support the comprehensive student-athlete leadership program and initiatives surrounding the student-athlete performance and development experience.  This position will research, plan, and coordinate programming and logistics to support student-athlete welfare, life skills, athletic performance, and personal development.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the day-to-day logistics and operations of student-athlete development  
  • Research leadership strategies, programming, and development to support the new Spider Athletics Leadership Initiative 
  • Coordinate large-scale leadership events, award celebrations, and guest speakers
  • Assist with advising the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) 
  • Support sport data and analytics programming including monitoring and tracking of Polar HRV data
  • Create a communications plan for leadership program implementation to key constituent groups 
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new programs and services related to leadership and student-athlete welfare
  • Assist with community service and outreach initiatives 
  • Contribute to the overall success of the intercollegiate athletics program by willingly performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Part-time Athletic Coordinator (2025-26)
Collegiate School Division of Athletics

Position Summary

The part-time Athletic Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Athletic Directors in support of tasks associated with the ongoing operations of the Athletic Department including event logistics, set-ups, and assistance with transportation arrangements. This position will also serve as a point of contact for visiting athletic guests and officials. This position is housed within the Division of Athletics and reports to the Director of Athletics. Graduate assistant will be employed on a part time basis, working approx. 17.5 hours a week.

Position Details

General Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Athletic Department staff to facilitate event logistics, setups, and supervision.
  • Support the transportation supervisor for athletics with tasks regarding team travel.
  • Serve as a host to visiting teams when they arrive on campus for athletic competitions.

Other Responsibilities may include: 

  • As needed, contribute beyond the position description to support the strategic vision of Collegiate School

Women’s Basketball Graduate Assistant Coach

REPORTS TO: Head Women’s Basketball Coach

JOB SUMMARY:

The Asst. Women’s Basketball Coach will work to develop the mind and character of the student-athlete. Primary responsibility is to coach/teach student-athletes in-game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition.  Student-athletes receive academic credit for participation in the varsity athletic program. 

PRIMARY ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following):

Assist the head coach with the following:

  1. Teaching the fundamentals of the sport by providing hands-on instruction to athletes to enhance skills and knowledge.  Involves presenting verbal and written materials, demonstrating proper techniques, and providing feedback to enhance performance.  
  2. Instruct team members individually and in groups and demonstrate game techniques.  May manage a designated skill development area or group of positions (guards, forwards, centers, zone defense, press offense, etc.)
  3. Devising and implementing game strategies and position assignments and instructing student-athletes accordingly.
  4. Takes an active role in game day strategy including drafting and developing scouting reports and practice plans. 
  5. Serve as academic/personal mentor to student-athletes. 
  6. Oversee social media accounts and platforms. Draft and design social media content to be used on social media platforms. Create innovative mailers for recruiting of potential student-athletes.
  7. Recruiting qualified student-athletes which could include: travel to high schools and AAU games, making and maintaining contact with high school coaches, and making personal contact with prospective student-athletes.  
  8. Assist with issuing, maintenance, and inventory of equipment.
  9. Other duties as assigned by the Head Women’s Basketball Coach.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, training, and experience required.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The duties of this job are performed in a wide variety of settings.  Most of the work is done on various athletic surfaces.  Travel by car is a necessary part of the job and may require several hours of driving over the course of a few days.  Occasional lifting or movement of materials weighing up to 75 pounds is necessary (usually for distances less than fifty yards).

GRADUATE ASSISTANT WOMEN'S LACROSSE COACH

Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a Graduate Assistant Women’s Lacrosse Coach. The assistant coach will help plan and execute practices and game plans for a competitive NCAA Division III program. Responsibilities include assisting the coaching staff with student-athlete recruitment and development, on-field instruction, strength training, equipment/uniform maintenance, social media management, and leadership training.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and previous competitive playing experience at the college or university level required; previous coaching experience preferred. The successful candidate will also become knowledgeable of NCAA Division III rules and regulations, be proficient with Windows operating system and have strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Must have a valid driver’s license with satisfactory motor vehicle record by insurance standards.  Will be required to attain CPR/First Aid certification.

Description of the Job:

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to work in the creative services department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating engaging content that includes, but is not limited, to video production, photography, graphic design, motion graphics and more, to be used for VCU Athletics social media channels, website and video board.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Premiere
  • Working knowledge of Adobe After Effects and Motion graphics
  • Knowledge of college athletic and social media trends

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides creative content and media relations assistance to the Public Relations department within the Department of Athletics. Assists with all types of Richmond Spiders home events as needed.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Produces creative content to highlight the best of Richmond Athletics (33%)
    • Could include photography, videography, graphic design, written content, motion graphics, or other methods of storytelling
    • Posts content to appropriate social media and web destinations as appropriate
  • Assists with PR needs at home sporting events  (33%)
    • Assists with statistics keeping operations
    • Works a video camera for the television broadcast
    • Assists with filling media requests
  • Works in office to update and maintain Richmond Athletics website and digital archives (33%)
    • Could include updating player bios, record books, photo archives, or other items.

Position Responsibilities: 

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Compliance Office during the 2025-26 academic year.

              Specific Responsibilities Include: 

  • Reviewing countable athletically related activities records and analyzing data using ARMS and NCAA Compliance Assistant software;
  • Monitoring countable athletically related activities and voluntary activities;
  • Maintaining student-athlete files and ensuring that all required NCAA and A-10 documentation are up to date;
  • Researching NCAA rules and regulations;
  • Assisting with interpretive issues of NCAA rules and regulations;
  • Assisting with auditing of various compliance areas as assigned;
  • Assisting in researching and compiling materials for Coaches’ rules education sessions;
  • Utilizing Compliance Assistant software (CAi) to input student-athlete and team data; and
  • Other projects and duties as assigned.

Graduate Assistantship: Learfield – VCU Sports Properties

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Partnerships area during the 2025-26 academic year.

Specifically, the Corporate Partnerships Graduate Assistants will work closely with all identification, outreach, ideation and fulfillment tasks associated with the partners of VCU Athletics and VCU RecWell. Tasks include prospecting, presentation preparation, post-sale activation management, event preparation including marketing set up and tear down, and day-to-day office management. Efforts will support VCU’s Division I intercollegiate athletic programs and the VCU RecWell Department. This position will work both cooperatively and independently with the VCU Sports Properties staff, VCU Athletics & VCU RecWell administrators and staff, as well as other University personnel and student organizations.

All duties and responsibilities will be assigned with the end goal of growing the corporate partnership portfolio for VCU Athletics & VCU RecWell, representing and promoting the VCU brands and increasing revenue for the departments.

VCU Athletics Development Graduate Assistant 2025-26

Description of the Job:

VCU Athletics is seeking a graduate assistant to assist in the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Development area during the 2024-25 academic year. 

Specifically, the Development Graduate Assistant will serve an important role as a liaison between the VCU Athletic Department and its 3,600 donors, a $3.5 million annual fundraising operation. This position will assist with implementing annual fundraising and stewardship plans, coordinating RAF events and hospitality, providing tremendous customer service, and representing VCU Athletics at numerous external functions, home athletic contests, donor trips, and University functions.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: 

  • Assist in the planning of all special events, including golf tournaments, donor trips and major department fundraising & stewardship events 
  • Provide customer service to all members of the Ram Athletic Fund 
  • Have direct interaction with donor base and season ticket holders

Title:   Development and Communications Intern

Duties and Responsibilities:

Henrico PAL’s Development and Communications Intern assists in all aspects of fundraising, communications, and marketing. This part-time position reports to the Executive Director.  The Intern will maintain donor records, acknowledge donations, and prepare correspondence regarding the organization and its programs. The Intern will also assist with external communications of the organization.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support all aspects of an annual development plan that includes goals, work plans, timelines, and donor cultivation.
  • Intern is primary point person for updating, adding and maintaining donor and constituent records in the database

Decription of the Job:

VCU Athletics is seeking a Facilities & Event Operations graduate assistant for 2025-26 to help fulfill the VCU Athletics Mission Statement by assisting the facilities and events department. 

The graduate assistant will have the opportunity to gain facility and event management knowledge while experiencing the excitement of NCAA Division I athletics. 

This position will assist during athletic and non-athletic events, set ups and break downs and after hours coverage of facilities. Graduate assistants should be familiar with facility policies and procedures and risk management practices. Reporting to the Director of Facilities and Operations, this position must have a flexible schedule, have a positive attitude.

Specific Responsibilities Include: 

  • Attend yearly orientations and sign a confirmation of read policies and procedures;
  • Schedule and supervise student staff and interns;
  • Coordinate facility projects for Siegel Center, Sports Medicine Building, Sports Backers Stadium, Cary Street Field, Thalhimer Tennis Facility, and others;
  • Assist in daily and game day management for intercollegiate athletic competitions, special events, weekly meetings, fairs, concerts, etc.;
  • Secure athletic facilities during after normal hours of Monday through Sunday, as well as morning room preparations, including opening meeting spaces and rooms.;
  • Learn how to operate all AV equipment in rooms designated for facility management;
  • Assist in set ups, breakdowns and turnovers during unusual work hours;
  • Event set up equipment include tables, chairs, stages and other related equipment;
  • Event set up must be completed in a timely fashion, they may need to be completed in a short period of time;
  • Oversee visiting team practices, walk-throughs and shoot-arounds while maintaining facility policies;
  • Complete facility walk-throughs and keep track of maintenance projects; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Please note, this GA position includes office hours, athletic events, and non-athletic events. Some night, holiday, and weekend commitments will be required in addition to regular office hours.

Specifically, the Marketing Graduate Assistants will work closely with all facets of game-day event planning and implementation. Tasks include pre-event planning and advertising, ticket sales, event preparation including marketing set up and tear down, game day script writing, production, and management. Marketing efforts will support VCU’s Division I intercollegiate athletic programs and the overall VCU Athletics brand.   • Overseeing all marketing responsibilities of select sports; developing and implementing marketing plans, promotional schedules and ticket sales campaigns as well as all aspects of game presentation (scripts, promotions, entertainment, etc.)
  • Executing group sales plan to increase attendance through community outreach efforts (emphasis on emails and calls to past groups as well as creatively targeting new prospects); 
  • Overseeing the special marketing programs. (i.e., Junior Rowdy Rams Kids Club);

Athletics Marketing Graduate Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position will be responsible for assisting with day-to-day activities of the marketing team within the University of Richmond Department of Athletics which include the coordination and execution of marketing and promotional plans for football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse and select other events. This position is an appointment for the 2024-2025 academic year.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the full-time marketing staff, this position will help in the following areas but no limited to:

  • Serve as a field producer/stage manager for various assigned games
  • Design, produce and distribute various marketing materials to solicit student and fan attendance at home contests
  • Research, create and implement various gameday themes, promotions and giveaways
  • Research, contact and coordinate national anthem performances and halftime entertainment
  • Work alongside the Gameday Experience team to develop Run of Show, PA Scripts, graphics and gameday activities
  • Create and research fun ideas for Spider Kids Club events and help make a plan on how to increase membership; will attend community events to market kids club to families.

Lobs & Lessons Graduate Assistant

The Mary and Frances Youth Center (MFYC) on the VCU campus offers two private tennis courts and classrooms designed for youth programming and youth centered training. The MFYC offers afterschool and summer enrichment programs for elementary, middle school, and high school  age youth that focuses on character development, career exploration, and  sport development with a focus on tennis. The primary location is MFYC, however, some programs are offsite at area schools. The afterschool program runs Monday – Friday between the hours of 2:30-6:30pm. This position will spend part of their time developing and leading enrichment programming, and the other part divided between planning, coordination, and outreach efforts. 

Pay Rate: $2,500 per semester

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and facilitate youth sports programming that is focused on leadership development and social skills 
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for current programming
  • Manage Social media presence
  • Plan and develop weekly plans and activities.
  • Responsible for programmatic administrative tasks to include creating monthly program calendars, developing and organizing attendance sheets, tracking registration systems, calling parents or partners and taking payments.
  • Direct program activities for youth: 
  • Lead daily life skills lessons  
  • Lead on-court physical activity instructions (on and off site)
  • Organize and represent the program at local community events and outreach efforts (may include some evenings and weekends).

Qualifications:

  • Must be admitted to VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership Graduate Program
  • Must be able to commit an average of 20 hours per week from August 2025-May 2026
  • Experience and desire to work with children; specifically, afterschool, summer or classroom setting. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with staff, parents and volunteers.
  • Proven ability to maintain high levels of endurance, positive attitude, and leadership abilities.

Youth Justice Sport Partnership

The Youth Justice Sport Partnership (YJSP) is a sport-based university-community partnership between Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Center for Sport Leadership (CSL) and Virginia’s Department of Juvenile Justice’s Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility. The partnership operates a sport-based healing-centered life skills program with youth involved in the justice system. Graduate Assistants with YJSP are on-site at Bon Air three times a week to run the sport-based life skills program with young people. In addition to program implementation, graduate assistants will get experience in program development, evaluation, and management in a sport for development program. Valued skills for this position include a passion for working with underserved young people, being adaptable in challenging environments, willingness to learn and be curious, and an ability to build strong, working relationships with young people.

Part-time Athletic Coordinator (2025-26)
Collegiate School Division of Athletics

Position Summary

The part-time Athletic Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Athletic Directors in support of tasks associated with the ongoing operations of the Athletic Department including event logistics, set-ups, and assistance with transportation arrangements. This position will also serve as a point of contact for visiting athletic guests and officials. This position is housed within the Division of Athletics and reports to the Director of Athletics. Graduate assistant will be employed on a part time basis, working approx. 17.5 hours a week.

Position Details

General Responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Athletic Department staff to facilitate event logistics, setups, and supervision.
  • Support the transportation supervisor for athletics with tasks regarding team travel.
  • Serve as a host to visiting teams when they arrive on campus for athletic competitions.

Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a Graduate Assistant in Strength and Conditioning for the Women’s Lacrosse program. The graduate assistant will help plan and execute strength and conditioning plans for a competitive NCAA Division III program. Responsibilities include creation of year long strength and conditioning programs, monitoring of student-athletes in the weight room, creating alternate workouts for injured players, and instruction of student-athletes for health and safety.

 

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in related field or certification in nationally recognized strength and conditioning program required; previous coaching experience preferred. The successful candidate will also become knowledgeable of NCAA Division III rules and regulations, be proficient with Windows operating system and have strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Will be required to attain CPR/First Aid certification.

  • Will receive training in our CRM Database, SimpleView, to be able to support and assist with the creating of accounts and leads, updating information such as hotel pick-up, and calendar of events for the website.
  • Assist the sports team with soliciting local restaurants and attractions to join our Experience Pass for visitors coming to town for a sports tournament.   
  • Assist the team with preparing for tradeshows by researching clients in advance to provide the sales manager with updates to help better prepare them for appointments.  Assist coordinator with creating appointment books and shipping any necessary materials ahead of the tradeshow for any booths or client events.
  • Research industry platforms and competing destinations for events that have open RFP’s (request for proposals) and/or would be a great fit for us to start prospecting.  Researching any trends like Esports and other growing/niche sports that may be a good market to tap into.
  • Assist the managers with putting together bid proposals in response to any RFP’s 
  • Assist the Sports Tourism Coordinator with keeping the content on our social media platforms up to date
  • May travel in local area during workday (including use of personal vehicle).

VCU Athletics Graduate Assistantship- Ticket Operations 

Virginia Commonwealth University is accepting applications for a Graduate Assistant position in the Athletic Ticket Office with an emphasis in ticket operations.

University of Richmond Position Description: Ticket Office Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY

The Ticket Office Assistant will assist in the day-to-day management of the Ticket Office for the Department of Athletics.  This position will assist the Director of Ticket Operations and Assistant Athletic Director of Strategic Ticketing and Sales with ticket sales, customer service and order fulfillment for football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse games.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide a high level of customer service to donors, ticket holders, and the general public.
